Rights Respecting Schools

Lossiemouth High School has enjoyed success with accreditation of the Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award from Unicef - achieving this in June 2021.

Staff and pupils at the school are working hard to ensure a culture of children's rights is embedded in our school and wider community.  A number of pupils have joined our pupil steering group.  Over the next few years, the pupil led steering group will support their school community to achieving the Gold Award.

Schools are required to implement three strands that cover teaching and learning about the rights, through the rights and for the rights.

  • Strand A:  Teaching and learning about rights (UNCRC)
  • Strand B:  Teaching and learning through rights - ethos and relationships
  • Strand C:  Teaching and learning for rights - participation, empowerment and action

Rights Week 2022

The Rights Respecting Schools Group organised lots of activities during Rights Week (13th – 17th June). 

To start the week off, on Monday lunchtime we had a peace crane challenge in the canteen. Some of our pupil experts demonstrated how to do this! LHS will shortly send over 1000 peace cranes to the Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima.

As part of rights week we have also been taking part in the 90kg rice challenge. The challenge involves selling 90 x 1kg bags of fair trade and sustainable rice grown by Malawian farmers. This will pay for one year of secondary education for a child in Malawi - so a bag of rice really can change a life.

All rice was sold on Tuesday 14th June at lunchtime at the following costs:

  • 1 bag - £3.50
  • 3 bags - £10
  • Taster pot – 50p

On Wednesday a few of our seniors and leavers put on a Freeze-Frame Drama production highlighting the importance or Rights! 

On Thursday - we ended the Rights week lunchtime activities with an opportunity for pupils and staff to get involved in a short film project. We captured what you have learned about rights during the week.

Rights Respecting Schools trip to Edinburgh

Rights Respecting Schools
On Thursday 8th June, Lossie High School’s Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group took their discussion on mental health support to the Scottish Parliament. The Steering group were very grateful to receive funds from our Parent Partnership to cover the cost of travel to Edinburgh. Pupils had the opportunity to attend First Minister’s Questions where they heard MSPs discuss issues such as the attainment gap and NHS waiting times. Following FMQ’s, the group met with Douglas Ross and Richard Lochhead to discuss issues pertaining to mental health and wellbeing in schools.
In the afternoon, we had lunch at Dynamic Earth before exploring the museum. Pupils spent time engaging with the interactive exhibits and learning about the climate crisis.
As a result of this trip, the group are now planning an assembly to be delivered to their peers on rights and global citizenship as part of our ambition to achieve the Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. Thank you to the Parent Partnership for their continued support.
