The Open University Young Applicants in Schools scheme is designed to give S6 students the opportunity to study a range of university level courses in school alongside their other subjects.

It is designed to bridge the gap between school and university; it encourages independent learning and builds confidence. It also develops key skills such as time management and accessing electronic resources.

Students register for YASS modules through the school but they then deal directly with the Open University when it comes to their course work and assessment.

Courses are offered in areas including Science, Engineering, Business Studies, IT and Computing, Arts, Mathematics, Health and Social Care, Sport and Exercise, and Languages. The courses are at SCQF Level 7, equivalent to both Advanced Higher and first year university level.

Courses can last from five to nine months. Shorter courses normally require up to eight hours of study a week, while a longer one can require up to 14 hours a week.
