You can make a claim for free school meals or a clothing grant if you are receiving any of the following benefits:

• Income Support
• Income-based Job Seekers' Allowance
• Any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance
• Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit, with an income of less than £19.995
• Both Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit with an income of up to £9,552
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• Universal Credit with a monthly earned income of not more than £796

If you are aged 16-18 years old, you may make a claim for free school meals and clothing grants, in your own right, if you receive any of the benefits that make you eligible.

If you get free school meals you may also be able to get help during the school holidays. To qualify you need to receive one of the benefits in the eligibility section above. Moray Council will make direct payments into bank accounts

Below are some of the commonly asked questions regarding Free School Meals:

Q: How much is my daily allowance?
A: £2.40 is automatically added to the card daily

Q: Does any unspent allowance carry over to the next day?
A: No, the card is automatically cleared at the end of each lunchtime.

Q: What time does my daily allowance go on to my card?
A: 12.30 pm on a Monday – Thursday and 10 am on a Friday. This allows you to either purchase items at morning break or to pre-order a ‘Grab & Go’ lunch at the kitchen servery in the morning.

Q: Do my peers and canteen staff know I am on free school meals?
A: No, this is totally confidential. All Young Scot cards look exactly the same.

Q: What can I choose for lunch?
A: You can choose from any of the 4 serving points and spend up to your daily allowance. If you want to spend more, you need to make sure you have put further funds onto your card.

Q: What do I do if my allowance hasn’t gone on to my card?
A: Speak to one of the canteen staff who will rectify the problem. Don’t worry you will still get your lunch.
