Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS)

Teaching Staff: Mr B Dick; Dr L Lukasiewicz

What is RMPS?

RMPS at Lossiemouth High School covers a wide range of topics which develop our pupils’ higher order thinking skills. RMPS is not the study of Christianity, that is not to say that lessons on Christianity aren’t delivered throughout the curriculum but, rather, that RMPS is the study of a diverse range of religious and non-religious beliefs and how they respond to certain moral and philosophical issues. Throughout their RMPS journey, pupils will be faced with questions such as: What happens when I die? Is there a God? What makes something right or wrong? What is the difference between belief and knowledge? How did the world come into being? and Does religion have a place in the 21st century?

What do we study in RMPS?

RMPS is delivered once a week in S1-S3. In S2, pupils have the opportunity to complete the Religion, Belief & Values Award National Progression Award (Level 3) which, upon successful completion, will earn them 12 SCQF points (equivalent of half of a National 5) which will appear on their exam certificates at the end S4. In S3, all pupils will study National 4 RMPS units in preparation for their study of National 5 RMPS and/or Philosophy should they elect to do so in S4.

In the senior phase (S4-S6), pupils have the opportunity to study RMPS at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. They also have the option to study Philosophy at National 5 and Higher levels.
