Welcome to the Maths Department!
At Lossiemouth High School we believe that all students should leave with the Maths skills they need to be successful in life. Our aim is to cover topics in number, algebra, geometry, ratio & proportion, statistics and probability and money with links to real world applications to ensure students leave equipped to deal with mathematical demands in the workplace or university.
Equipment you need
There are certain pieces of equipment that you must bring to Maths with you every period. These are a pencil, ruler, rubber, and a scientific calculator.
Some topics will require special equipment such as a pair of compasses and a protractor. Your teacher will let you know in advance when you will need these.
The department runs a small Maths shop where you can buy what you need if you forget anything or do not have the right equipment.

In S1 and S2 you will have a period of Numeracy. You will learn and practise key skills you will need to be successful in all areas of school and life outside of school.
In S1 your numeracy course will be partly delivered through Sumdog classes in a computer suite.
At the end of S2 there will be a formal assessment which, along with teacher judgement, will determine which course you will follow in S3 and then in S4.
What you will be studying in S3-S6
In S4 to S6, students will be able to choose from National 4 or 5 Mathematics, National 5 Applications of Mathematics, or Higher Mathematics.
In S6, students with a Higher pass at grade A or B level will be able to study Advanced Higher Mathematics.
Homework
On average, every pupil from S1-S5/6 will receive 1 piece of Mathematics homework per week. Time spent on homework will increase further up the school. Your class teacher will post your homework on Microsoft Teams and give you one week to complete the task.
The department runs a homework club once per week during Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime in order to help students to complete homework they are having difficulty with or to simply offer a quiet place in which to complete homework.
UKMT Maths Challenges
From S1 upwards, pupils who work hard and enjoy Maths can be asked to represent the school in the UKMT Maths Challenge. Pupils from all over Great Britain take part and you may receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate for your efforts. Taking part in one of these challenges is something to work towards.
