Raising Attainment

Raising Attainment classes

All S5 and S6 pupils have at least one period of Raising Attainment each week. This is a timetabled class with a teacher overseeing pupils studying to give them an opportunity in school to consolidate their learning. Many Raising Attainment classes are scheduled in learning plazas or computer suites so pupils can have access to computers. On the S5 and S6 year group teams, there is a class notebook where pupils are asked to keep a log of what they are working on in their Raising Attainment classes. The teacher taking the class will keep an eye on pupils' progress in their tracking and ensure pupils are working on the subjects that they may need to devote more time to.

There are sometimes study skills lessons that are covered in Raising Attainment periods.

Raising Attainment teachers, Guidance teachers and SLT will closely scrutinise the tracking. Some pupils are assigned staff mentors to help them to manage their time and plan their studying.

Study Skills Week

Study Skills Week

In week beginning 9 September, Lossiemouth High School will be promoting study skills within the Senior Phase (S4-6). This is in response to feedback we’ve received from parents and pupils that indicates many pupils lack confidence with studying, especially towards exams, and would appreciate some suggestions as to study techniques they can use to help them meet their full potential within each subject area. If parents also have access to a bank of tried and tested study techniques, they may also be able to support at home in the run up to exams.

In all S4-6 classes, all pupils will discuss study skills within each of their subject during this week. Pupils will share what study techniques have worked best for them, and teachers will also recommend techniques that can be effective when studying their particular subject. All of this feedback will be captured on a poster, and then the feedback from all classes will be collated into a study skills booklet that will then be issued to all S4-6 students, and also emailed to parents. The booklet will divided into different subject sections so pupils can look up what study techniques are recommended for all of the subjects they study.

We hope this will be a useful exercise to all learners in S4-6, and to parents supporting them. We hope to share the booklet with pupils and parents once all feedback is collected within the next three weeks.

Parents Info Evening: Supporting your Learner – Monday 9 September

To kick off study skills week, we are hosting a parent info evening on Monday 6 September 2024 from 6-7.30pm. The purpose of this evening is to give parents more information about the standard that learners aspire towards in the Senior Phase (National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher), and how school and home can help to support independent study skills enabling learners to be successful in their academic qualifications. There will be presentation in the atrium initially, with some pupils sharing their experiences of studying and advice they would pass on to learners, and to their parents on how they can best support. Thereafter, we will break into the atrium for parents to look at exam standard work, past papers and study resources, and speak to some more senior pupils. Refreshments will be available. All parents and carers welcome: not just those of pupils in S4-6. It’s never too early to start thinking towards the senior phase so our learners can develop good study habits that will stand them in good stead for their formal qualifications.

Intervention Policy

Intervention Policy: S4-6 pupils
This year, after each Senior Phase tracking window, departments will be sending letters to parents and carers if they have any concerns about their child’s progress so far in the course. The purpose of these letters is to give parents more specific advice on what their child needs to do to improve (e.g. attending study sessions, working through any particular resources provided). The hope is that these letters will ensure action can be taken promptly to address progress concerns rather than waiting until the next parents’ night). If you receive any of these letters and aren’t quite sure what you or your child needs to do, please do get in touch with the school to discuss. The earlier in the year we can all work together to best support your child, the better, as we want all learners to achieve in their qualifications at the highest possible level.
