Support for Learning

SFL staff aim to support pupils in mainstream classes as much as possible. However, for a small number of pupils, this is not always possible and these pupils spend varying amounts of time in the SFL department, working in a small group or on a one to one with a member of staff. As well as lessons, developing literacy and number skills, these pupils can participate in art and music activities, horse riding and individual swimming lessons.

We have a fantastic new purpose built Support for Learning Department and Pupil Support facility which enables youngsters with additional support needs to be taught in the same school as their peers. Many senior pupils volunteer to work with younger pupils in the Support for Learning Department and this has had a positive effect on all pupils throughout the school.

Courses
In S3 we offer courses at Access Level to suit pupils for whom Standard Grade mainstream courses are not appropriate. In the past we have offered:

Young people are advised by staff and can choose the courses in which they have an interest.

Teachers
Mrs Margaret Steel (P.T)
Mrs Yvonne Steven
Mrs Patricia Munro
Mrs Alison Beacham (also Maths)

Help with Revision
The SFL department is open daily from 1.15pm to 1.45pm for help with homework. The Spelling Club meets on Wednesday evening at 3.45pm - 4.45pm (late bus is available)

Extra-Curricular
As many of our courses are of a practical nature and involve visits and out of school activities, these activities are organised when necessary.

All pupils are encouraged to speak to staff in this department if they require help, or simply for access to a computer for their own research or redrafting of work.

This department has a team of Support for Learning auxiliaries who provide help for pupils in mainstream classes and in the SFL department:
