Chemistry Nat 4/5

Chemistry is broken down into 3 units covering a range of topics. Each topic has a variety of practical’s that can be done to enhance the theory.

Chemical Changes and Structure

Nature’s chemistry

Chemistry in society

The National 4 certificate is awarded on a pass/fail basis. There is no externally marked exam, however, students are passed based on the evidence they have collected in their evidence jotter, together with an extended piece of research (added value unit).

Task 1 A Scientific Report on an experiment

Task 2 A Research task on a Chemical Issue and its effect on environment/society.

Task 3 End of unit test (Pupils must pass all 3 units - 50% to pass)

Nat 4 - Added value assignment

The National 5 certificate is awarded on a scale of A-D, and in addition to the end of unit tests and assessed tasks, each student is presented for the external exam.  The knowledge-based paper is based on the work completed on the National 5 content studied. The assignment (added value unit) which allows students to present work that they have researched previously is also   externally marked.

Task 1 A Scientific Report on an experiment

Task 2 A Research task on a Chemical Issue and its effect on environment/society.

Task 3 End of unit test (Pupils must pass all 3 units - 50% to pass)

Nat 5 - Added value assignment - Written up in class time but externally marked.

In the January/February a prelim exam will be completed, and the basis of this result will decide on whether each student showed be presented for the National 4 or the National 5 certificate.
